Peter Bond

Peter Bond is a lifelong space enthusiast. He was born in Hampshire in 1948, so he lived through the exciting birth of the Space Age with the pioneering launches of Sputnik and Gagarin, and the first manned spacecraft landing on the Moon.

After obtaining an Honours degree in Geography from London University, he began a long and successful career in teaching. His first book was published in 1987, and has since become a well-known science journalist and author. He regularly contributes to many magazines and newspapers including The Independent, New Scientist, Astronomy Now and Astronomy.

In recent years, his role as the Space Science Advisor for the Royal Astronomical Society has enabled him to publicise and explain the latest advances in UK space science. Since 1998, he has played a similar role at the Science Communication Office of the European Space Agency.

As a member of the Royal Astronomical Society Education Committee and editorial advisor to Astronomy & Geophysics journal, Peter is committed to improving public awareness and understanding of astronomy and space science. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and the British Interplanetary Society, and a member of the British Astronomical Association, the Planetary Society and the Association of British Science Writers.

Peter's DK Guide to Space won the £10,000 Junior Prize of the Aventis Prizes for Science Books 2000. The prize  aims to encourage the writing, publishing and sale of popular science books for non-specialist readers. Pupils from 31 schools all over the UK voted the Guide to Space their favourite from a shortlist of 6 science books (out of 52 nominations) that were selected by an adult panel chaired by Professor David Bellamy.

Peter Bond is married and lives in Cranleigh, Surrey.
